15 - 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
16 - 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
17 - 4 lettuce leaves (optional)
18 - 4 tomato slices (optional)

# How-To:

01 - In a large skillet over medium heat, combine butter and olive oil. Add onions, sprinkle with sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until deep golden brown and very soft. Remove from skillet and set aside.
02 - In the same skillet, add butter and mushrooms. Cook over medium-high heat for 5–7 minutes until browned and tender. Add garlic, cook for 1 more minute, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
03 - In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 equal patties, slightly larger than the buns.
04 - Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side for medium doneness. During the last minute, place a cheese slice on each patty and cover to melt.
05 - Lightly toast burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
06 - Spread mayonnaise on the bottom buns if desired. Add lettuce and tomato, then the beef patty. Top with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Finish with the top bun.

02 -
  • Caramelizing onions takes patience and cannot be rushed without sacrificing flavor
  • Letting patties rest for a couple minutes after cooking keeps juices inside
03 -
